RENEWAL

SMU Libraries and Renew Earth Sweat Shop are pleased to present RESS Midterms. RESS Midterms is a multi-event project that includes the art exhibition Renewal, activations and workshops, community workspace, craft goods showcase, clothes adoption corner and fashion waste recycling station. RESS Midterms will be housed at SMU de Suantio Gallery till 13 Nov 2022.

Midterm: a halfway point, a test, a moment to take stock; how are we doing, and what are we not doing that we now must?

Intersecting art, community, design and craft, Renew Earth Sweat Shop creates micro-community spaces in response to the global environmental and labour issues in fashion. For its third season, from June 2022 to February 2023, RESS set out to confront 500kg of unwanted clothes and transform this waste into meaningful purpose. Though no doubt this is a paltry effort against the 189,000 tonnes of textile waste Singapore generated in 2021 alone. And yet, from heartlands to libraries, and museums to malls, a network of human endeavours in imagination, creativity, resourcefulness and commerce is made material and visible in all its belief, cynicism, tenacity and trepidation.

This midterm, 13 artists, a philosopher and a congregation of artworks converge in a month-long community workspace. Join in their effort and those of volunteers and partners in a signal of hope and change.

Featuring Adel Ng X Shauna Goh, Agatha Lee "Agy", Alysha Rahmat Shah, Atelier Rat Bastard, Bernice Lee, Ezzam Rahman, Farhan C. Idris, Harshita Agarwal, Julia Winter, Lisa Teng, Nobuyuki Sugihara x Ayaka Nakamura, Shirley Soh, and Veronyka Lau
